Salten Energigjenvinning AS

Salten Energigjenvinning AS is a 50/50 Joint Venture between Elkem and Kvitebjørn Energi, incorporated to construct and operate an Energy Recovery Plant ("ERP") in connection with the three furnaces at Elkem's silicon smelting plant in Salten. The ERP is expected to be completed towards the end of 2020 and will utilise the furnaces’ off-gas heat to produce steam which is then led through a turbine for electricity production. An estimated 270-280 GWh of electricity will be generated annually, corresponding to the consumption of approx. 15,000 households. Proven technology, similar to that chosen for Elkem’s ERPs at Bjølvefossen (Norway), Thamshavn (Norway), and Chicoutimi (Canada), is to be applied in this project.

Operations: Energy recovery and power generation

Sustainability: Off-gas heat

Location: Salten, Norway

Year of investment: 2017
